I read with interest the article ‘Piazza dream for city’s Gloucester Green area, October 1’ – which painted a fairly rosy picture of the proposed plans to regenerate the area.
The magestic trees on Gloucester Green
What it failed to mention was that these plans called the trees ‘imposing’ and that they blocked ‘daylight into the square’. The mock ups of how the square would look after their ‘improvements’ showed all 26 mature trees removed. Instead of ‘imposing’ you might use the word ‘majestic’. Instead of ‘blocking light’ you might say ‘provide shade’.
Why do improvements always seem to come at the cost of our natural environment? If these trees are chopped down it would be a grotesque act of cultural vandalism and I hope the city council will guarantee that the trees will be preserved in any plan given the green light.
