AN 83-year-old volunteer who helps run a sight loss support group has been handed an award for her work.
Daphne Dorman, of Woodstock, won the chairman’s award for volunteering at the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence for her dedication to the society’s local support group.
She founded an Oxford group in 1992 and later started groups in Abingdon, Kidlington and Banbury to support people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
The condition affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK.
She said: “I am thrilled, absolutely thrilled, it’s a tremendous honour.
“I feel volunteering is very important and there is not a lot of support for people with macular degeneration. It’s nice to be able to help people where I can.”
