THEY’RE used to tackling fires and rescuing people.
But marking 50 years of saving lives on Saturday, firefighters at Abingdon Fire Station celebrated with a bit of bun-throwing.
Chief Fire Officer Dave Etheridge joined local councillors and Abingdon Mayor Angela Lawrence in the 400-year-old tradition as crews marked the station’s anniversary.
Memorabilia from half a century of service was on display at the station alongside old and new fire engines.

Mr Etheridge said he was delighted with the support people in the town had shown for the firefighters. He said: “It is a fantastic open day and a great opportunity for people coming to meet their fire crews who are at the heart of Abingdon.
“We want to make sure we can stay in contact with firefighters and make sure they know they The Fire Fighters Charity is there for them.
“It is great to celebrate the last 50 years and the contribution the fire station has made to the town.”
Since the 1761 coronation of King George III, Abingdon has marked major occasions by hurling hundreds of buns off the roof of the old County Hall to crowds below.
