HUNDREDS of people enjoyed coffee and cake yesterday to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The charity’s biggest fundraising event asks people across the UK to hold a coffee morning to raise money for people living with cancer.

Rachel Warren took part at The Varsity Club’s event on its rooftop terrace in High Street, Oxford.

The marketing consultant, who lives near Witney, said: “Macmillan is a charity that’s close to everyone’s hearts. I could have gone anywhere for coffee but I went to have a piece of cake and put £10 in the box.

“My family have lost a few close people to cancer and the charity that we always donate to is Macmillan.”

Organiser and bar owner Yvonne Oppon said: “We were just donating instead of putting into the till. Lots of poeple came and we had lots of home-made cakes which was nice.”

Former mayor of Woodstock Gwen Mason held her 17th Macmillan coffee morning at her home, collecting more than £1,000.

This brings her total donation to Macmillan Cancer Support to £11,790.

Mrs Mason, 69, said: “I had breast cancer 18 years ago and my husband Keith has lung cancer at the moment so I’ve done this to help.

“We have used Macmillan nurses in the past and it’s quite possible we will use them again, so it’s worth supporting.”

Last year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event saw 1,500 people in Oxfordshire give money at coffee mornings, raising £160,000.

While most of the coffee mornings took place yesterday, Leys Community Market is continuing the fundraising today.

The market will be selling cakes, tea and coffee in the Barn in Nightingale Avenue, Greater Leys, from 11am to 2pm.
