LITTLE is known about Frederick Walker’s involvement in the First World War.

His family have discovered that he served in France with the Durham Light Infantry, but have been unable to find any more details about his war record.

Even this picture of him in a cricket team came as a surprise. He is thought to be sitting on the ground on the right.

His grandson, Alan Trinder, writes: “I didn't even know he had played cricket until this photograph was found.

Oxford Mail:

Touching message: Frederick Walker is believed to be the player sitting on the ground on the right. Can anyone tell us where and when the photograph was taken?

“No details are known about his war service other than that he served in the Durham Light Infantry.

“Do any of your readers know where or when the photograph may have been taken?

“The family was living in Pensons Gardens, St Clement’s, Oxford, at the time of the war. How he came to be attached to the Durham Light Infantry is another mystery.”

Other family possessions include an embroidered greetings card sent by Mr Walker to his daughter, Dorothea, from France during the war, with the words ‘A kiss from your Daddie’.

Mr Trinder, of Manor Road, Wantage, said: “There is no date on the card and the small card with the message, ‘I’m thinking of you’, was tucked inside it.”

Can anyone tell us more?
