These girls were champions when it came to knowing the Highway Code. They were named the top team in the Thames Valley in a competition which attracted entries from more than 40 schools in 1974. The girls are, left to right, Gillian East, 14, Caroline Daniels, 14, Sarah France, 14, Deborah Bolton, 13, and Jane Bayes, 14.

The town waited 30 years for a bypass and when the £1.7m road was completed in 1979, it was time for celebration. Among those enjoying the moment was a very happy looking Nora Sellwood.
