YOUNG gardeners honed their horticultural skills at a Super Sunflower event at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden on Monday.
The garden’s sunflowers were the main attraction, but there was plenty else on offer to keep the little watering-can wielders entertained, including compost castles and bulb planting.
Among the children to enjoy the event was Esme Williams. three, who said: “It was good. We watered lots of sunflowers, that was the best bit. I’m going to have a garden full of sunflowers when I’m older.”
Esme’s mother, Rebecca, shared her daughter’s enthusiasm for the event, which was held from 10.30am until 12.30pm and was free to enter.

She said: “It was a really lovely event and there were so many activities going on. The weather was amazing. All the children were traipsing around with their mini watering cans and really getting involved.
“We arrived early and were some of the first people there. As the day went on it got very busy, but it was great.
“There were four or five different things to do including crafts and story-telling. It was brilliant and educational as well as being loads of fun.”
