Six-year-old Joe Lewis has made a superhero cake for a special cause.

The Yarnton resident is raising money and awareness for national charity Make-A-Wish UK to thank them for redecorating his bedroom with superheroes last year.

The youngster has a cerebral arteriovenous malformation, a potentially lethal collection of blood vessels in his brain that could burst at any time.

His mum Tracey, who is married to marketing manager Iain, said: “It’s really incredibly rare, because normally these veins are about the size of a 10p piece, but his is the size of a small fist.

“What happens next is what I don’t want to happen. If you’re filling a balloon with water, eventually it will pop. That’s the scenario we’re looking at with his head.

“It could happen at any time.

“We found out four years ago and we’ve adapted our lives around it.”

The 41-year-old, also mum to Matthew, 16, and Kai, 14, said: “I applied to Make-A-Wish and they came and did a bedroom makeover, which was amazing. I wanted to give something back to say thank you, to get involved and make people aware of the charity as well as Joe’s condition.”

Mother and son baked and decorated the cake for Bake-A-Wish, the charity’s national fundraising campaign.

Joe said: “Making the cake was fun and better than making a normal chocolate sponge cake because I got to make all my favourite characters.

“The best bit was licking out the bowl and eating the cake and also icing.”
