Of course they won’t have the roar of the unforgettable Rolls Royce Merlin engines, but plans for a ‘County of Oxford’ squadron of 12 replica Spitfires taking to the skies to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain next year will send plenty of pulses racing.
When we first reported Enstone Flying Club’s ambitious plans two years ago for a squadron, they estimated it would take 2,000 man hours and £200,000 to build just one twin seater model.
Now they’ve accomplished that they need their own squadron of volunteers and, of course, wealthy donors, to make the anniversary dream come true.
If we Brits managed to turn out Spitfires throughout the darkest days of the Second World War, it seems highly possible that Oxfordshire – with its proud links with the Royal Air Force – has the grit, determination and skills to get the job done for 2015.
We wish them luck.
