WITNEY MP David Cameron has congratulated the people of Burford for organising a mock “referendum” on the issue of Scottish independence – but has admitted he was more relieved to find out the result of the actual poll.
The Prime Minister was visiting a printing firm in his constituency yesterday after welcoming the results of Thursday’s referendum which saw the people of Scotland vote to remain in the UK.
Burford Town Council had organised a referendum to find out what the townsfolk thought about the issue and the unionists were also victorious, with 201 voting no and 31 voting yes.
Mr Cameron said: “Full marks to the people of Burford for demonstrating to people in Scotland that the rest of the UK cares about the decision they made.
“I am not surprised by the result but, if I may be, I am more pleased that people in Scotland voted to stay in the union.”
He was visiting Fine Print in Range Road, which has invested £1.5m in new machinery and seen sales grow by 15 per cent.
The Prime Minister met managing director Dan Bakewell and a number of apprentices.
