THE county’s potholes will be brought to the Government’s attention as the council vowed to lobby for more cash.
At a meeting yesterday, the council’s cabinet agreed a new management plan for Oxfordshire’s highways.
This will mean channelling money away from roads which are classed as ‘red’ – in need of urgent maintenance – and towards those which are less damaged.
Council bosses have said there is not enough money to bring the county’s roads into a state of good repair, saying that £160m would be needed for this.
Ian Hudspeth, the leader of the county council, said: “Lobbying the Government is something I do at every opportunity.
“I think there has been a gradual decline in funding for this and we have to congratulate our staff for keeping the roads in such good condition.”
The county council has forecast the amount of road surface classified as red will increase from 57km to 107km within the next decade.
Also approved by the cabinet was the council’s response to its recent Ofsted report which judged that the authority’s children’s service is good in all areas.
The council has put together an action plan – including improvements in foster care and the local education authority’s complaints procedures – in response to the report.
