Sir – Most residents of Kidlington are aware that the High Street was pedestrianised in April 2012, and it was anticipated that enforcement would be difficult due to the police funding being cut. Kidlington Parish Council put pressure on Cherwell District Council to provide some physical barrier.
That is why a partnership was formed between Cherwell District Council and Kidlington Parish Council to explore enforcement, and the decision was made to install a rising bollard. Cherwell District Council has led this project with support from the parish council.
Two years later, and the bollard was still not in place. Residents were, quite rightly, describing the delay as farcical.
In July 2014, I asked Barry Wood, the leader of Cherwell District Council, whether the protracted affair of the rising bollard was any closer to being completed, and was assured that he would convene a round-table meeting to accelerate the project. Since then, the county council has issued the Section 278 permit for works to be completed on the highway, and I have been informed that a meeting will take place on September 11 involving representatives from Cherwell and Kidlington Parish Council.
I hope that Mr Wood will be able to give residents a firm date being set for the long-awaited enforcement of our pedestrian zone.
