Sir – The proposed Guided Bus System (Report, September 4) would be a disaster for Oxford, the city is choked with buses already and they want to add more.

If the powers that be like the idea of a wheeled vehicle being guided by a trackway there is a technology already in existence, it’s called a railway.

Railways have existed for 175 years; the present Government is spending billions on modernising and electrifying the network to provide an efficient, environmentally-friendly mass transport system.

Trams or light railway is a simpler version and has the same benefits mentioned; they are used in several cities in the UK and all over the world, what more proof do you need?

The answer to relieving the congestion on the A40 and other routes into Oxford is to provide a viable mass transit system that will give commuters a real alternative to their cars. This means a tram system that has stops or small stations with car parks nearby so commuters from outlying villages can leave their cars and access the tram.

It’s not rocket science it is just common sense, don’t waste money on cheap temporary schemes; invest in proven long-term systems for all of Oxfordshire’s residents and future well being.
