Sir – To reintroduce buses to the Cornmarket will return a primary retail street to the unpleasant and dangerous quagmire it was before.
I can remember one of the last deaths reported in The Oxford Times. An old man was run over and crushed by a bus. It warranted just one square inch, being not that unusual.
Then there are the diesel emissions, which would cause more cancer and respiratory disease.
But most of all, the Cornmarket would become again a very unpleasant place to be, damaging the business which is done there. It would become far more polluted, crowded and noisy.
One has to ask exactly why the bus companies always seem to get whatever they ask for, and why this massive leap backwards is even being considered.
I’m sure the PR people have been busy, but I dare to hope others will wake up and see the horror of this proposal before it is too late. The future of transport is in light electric vehicles, from e-bike to tram, and not the expensive, inefficient and polluting diesel bus.
Dr Ian East, Islip
