Sir – To return traffic to Cornmarket would be a major retrograde step, in my view. Since pedestrianisation it is a pleasure to see residents and visitors thronging the street and enjoying the buskers.
I am old enough to remember when the A40 came up the High and turned right at traffic lights at Carfax, into Cornmarket and up the Woodstock Road. Never again.
I would restrict delivery lorries, builders trucks etc, to shorter hours in Cornmarket than at present.
The problem of assisting the elderly or disabled, or those with young children, to cross the city centre, could be eased by installing moving pavements one to each side of Cornmarket, plus a shuttle minibus service (electrically-powered preferably) from George Street round into New Road, into Queen Street, down the High and back into the Broad and George Street again.
The sheer volume of city centre traffic makes every problem worse — why not keep long-distance coaches out of the centre — restricted to the rail stations and the park-and-rides — making them into transport hubs much more effectively than at present, and they are already well served by buses.
