I read with interest Mr Haines’ article about his collection of items relating to the former Oxfordshire constabulary.
From 1957 to 1959 I was a Cadet in the Oxford City Police. We combined with the County Cadets for a training day once a month and did Square bashing in the yard of the old County HQ in New Road. It was a very small area, like a dog’s hind leg. We could only take a few steps and had to change direction.
The whole plot of land included the prison.
In the event of an escape, a 999 call would come in.
We would set up road blocks at all major roads leaving the city. One of the first vehicles to seen was the County CID man en route to the prison to deal with the escape.
