I READ your interesting articles on Helen Shapiro in Memory Lane recently and thought your readers might be interested in another pop star of the 1960s.
My sister, Ann Sellars, won a painting competition run by Wards, the furniture and carpet store in Park End Street, Oxford.
Billy Fury was appearing at the New Theatre in the pantomime Aladdin and the various category winners were invited to go to the show and meet him afterwards where he presented them with certificates of merit. The picture appeared in the Oxford Mail in January 1966.
My sister is the little girl sitting on Billy’s knee. She was five at the time and won the under-eights’ section for her teddy bears’ picnic painting.
The other winners were, left to right, Susan Goodenough, Janet Simmons, Dennis Swanton, Steven Souch, Anne Dennis and Stephen Simmons.
Ann would be delighted to get a mention in the Oxford Mail again after all these years!
