A NORTH Oxford school hopes to have a set of new buildings in Banbury Road for its sixth form pupils ready for September 2016.
Independent school d’Overbroeck’s College is hoping to turn the former Masonic centre at 333 Banbury Road into a teaching site and number 376, across the road, into a sixth-form boarding house.
Principal Sami Cohen said the scheme could be submitted to Oxford City Council within a month, following a public exhibition on September 5 and a meeting with the Oxford Design Review Panel on Thursday.
He said: “We’ve have been trying to find extra space for our sixth formers for several years. At the moment our areas for them are too fragmented, across three separate sites, and our social and dining space is also very restricted.
“This will give us a consolidated space, which would be fantastic and would be a key provision for the next few decades.”
Mr Cohen said the school would be able to perform better in conditions that were less cramped.
He said feedback from residents given at the public exhibition, as well as by planners of the Oxford Design Review Panel, would be incorporated into revised designs for the buildings.
Until September 2012, 333 Banbury Road was home to the Oxford Centre, which was used as a Masonic lodge and conference centre. The original house dates back to 1823 and is to be retained in the plans.
