FIVE mums from a school near Chipping Norton raised more than £3,000 for charity by each cycling 54 miles.

The women, whose children all go to Kingham Primary School, took part in the London to Brighton cycle ride, organised by the Do It For Charity organisation, on Sunday.

They completed the challenge in about five hours and raised the money for the Rafiki Thabo Foundation, which supports education projects in Africa.

Kingham resident Janet Hayes – mum to Oliver, six, and Isla, four – is the director of the charity.

The 40-year-old said: “It was a difficult challenge. There’s a notorious hill called the Ditchling Beacon, which is very difficult to climb, but we did it.

“We trained in the Cotswolds where it’s very hilly so we had a good training route.

“The team spirit of doing it together really helped.

“I’ve been saying for years I ought to do something like that ro raise money but it’s the first time I’ve managed to do it so I’m really proud.

“We’re looking at what we can do next year.”

The other participants included Chipping Norton residents Karen Lawrence and Melanie Jones, Clarissa Hunt, from Long Compton in Warwickshire and Lynsey McDonald, from Moreton-in-Marsh.
