* More exciting news from the good people behind the City of Dreaming Spires’ interesting — if unimaginatively titled — festival of local talent, OxfordOxford. Having already announced Klaxons, Gaz Coombes and Katy B will be gracing the big top main stage on Saturday September 27, they have now revealed further additions to the line-up. Saturday’s music day also features Mercury Prize-nominated artist Michael Kiwanuka and rising stars Many Things, who join the previously announced Tunng, Christian Gregory, Celeste, and Oxford acts Pixel Fix, Dance a la Plage, Flights of Helios, Balloon Ascents and Robot Swans. On Sunday’s community day, Audioscope and Sofar Sounds host an acoustic tent featuring local acts Tamara Parsons-Baker, Jordan O’Shea, Vienna Ditto, Count Drachma, and Duchess. * Well, the summer’s last major music festival, Bestival, certainly lived up to its reputation as the loveliest, friendliest and most impressive of the year. Among those leading the action were Oxford’s own Foals, headlining the main stage on Saturday. While the boys played a blinding set, things did not get off to an auspicious start for frontman Yannis Philippakis, who was initially turned away from the backstage entrance for failing to have the correct wristbands. It was only when the gathering crowd yelled “That’s Yannis from Foals!” that the conscientious official let the poor lad in. Yannis and the band repaid them with one of the best sets of their careers, with a spine-tingling laser-lit finale featuring a shower of confetti.
* It may be the smallest of villages, but that doesn’t stop Binsey putting on a spectacular fete – with a line-up that dwarfs some festivals. The August List, Knights of Mentis, Billy Trivers, the Wild West Retirement Fund and perennial party-starters The Gees grace the village green for the seventh annual event, near The Perch pub. Epstein frontman and Binsey villager Olly Wills says: “We have a great line-up and are once again raising funds for West Oxford Primary School, Binsey Church and Oxford Food Bank with a great family event.”
