TO David Cameron: I read with some trepidation that according to a recent article you are considering military involvement in Syria on the pretext of fighting the ISIL terrorists. I’m not aware that the Syrian government has requested assistance and from what I can see the Syrians themselves seem most proficient in fighting terrorism. The article quoted you saying “UK could launch strikes against ISIS in Syria without Assad’s support, says PM” due to the fact you consider Assad’s Government to be “illegitimate”.
Can I just remind you of the basis of the UN Charter, Article 2, paragraph 4, “All members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the UN.” I see no mention about Mr Cameron’s personal opinions. Therefore even your threat of military strikes is against international law before you even start.
Secondly, I noticed your plans to arm the Iraqi Kurds. I’m assuming that you know this would also be contrary to international law without the approval of the Iraqi Government. There is no such place as Kurdistan, most Kurds in any case live in Turkey.
Please remember that you represent the UK, not Washington, Tel Aviv or Nato HQ, and please stop referring to Russian aggression in Ukraine unless you can specify what that means.
