The Community Information Network, run by Age Oxfordshire and Volunteer Link Up and supported by Oxfordshire County Council, has launched throughout Oxfordshire.
It provides free information and advice to older people about local support services and benefits, events, groups and activities as well as opportunities to volunteer locally.
The Community Information Network can provide information and advice over the phone or in person at local events and information drop-in points. It also provides online support through the Age UK Oxfordshire website — with a growing directory of local services, activities and groups to browse through. Networkers can also visit people in their own home.
Penny Thewlis, deputy chief executive of Age UK Oxfordshire, said: “The aim of the new Network is to ensure that everyone in later life across the county has information, advice, opportunities and support to help them stay independent and feel involved in their local community — in short: involved, informed, in touch.”
As part of the Network, Volunteer Link-Up is providing support for local volunteer Good Neighbour Schemes who offer befriending, transport and practical help to older people in the community. Volunteer Link-Up can offer advice and guidance to existing schemes, as well as to communities wishing to set up a new scheme in their area.
Penny added: “Since its launch in May, the response to the Network from older people, their families and local organisations has been incredible and confirms that this new service is crucial not only to promote health and wellbeing among older people, but to reduce isolation and re-connect people to their communities.”
If you or someone you know could benefit from the Community Information Network or you would like to receive free information about activities and support in your local area, call 0345 450 1276 or visit www.ageuk.org.uk/oxfordshire
Over the coming months the Community Information Network is looking to recruit volunteers to help deliver the service. You don’t need to be an expert to volunteer — you’ll be part of a team and will receive support and training as soon as you join. Whether you have an hour or a day to spare each month, you can make a big difference.
