A CHARITY which lost money after allowing people to watch the Didcot Power Station cooling towers demolition from its land has now recovered its costs.

The Earth Trust spent £4,000 providing stewards for parking, tea and coffee and temporary toilets so residents could watch the event from Wittenham Clumps, in return for a donation.

About 2,500 people turned up early on Sunday, July 27, but only £1,800 was collected from them, leaving the trust with a significant shortfall.

However, chief executive Jayne Manley told the Oxford Mail last night that the power station’s owner, npower, had since given it £3,000 and South Oxfordshire District Council contributed £1,000 towards its costs.

She said: “Between the donations from npower and the council, we have now been able to cover our costs.

“It’s fantastic news. We had approached them both before the event but they had not confirmed if the money would come in. We received the donations late on Tuesday.”

It comes after Ms Manley had appealed to the public last week for donations to help make up the £2,200 shortfall.
