THOUSANDS of music lovers are expected to enjoy a bumper weekend at two Oxfordshire festivals.

The 34th annual Cropredy festival began today in the village just outside Banbury, with hosts Fairport Convention upholding the tradition of opening the three-day event with an acoustic set.

About 20,000 people are expected at the sold out folk and rock music festival, which will see an appearance from Chas ‘n’ Dave as well as bands including the Waterboys and Marillion.

Fairpoint Convention will also close proceedings on Saturday evening.

Revellers will also be flocking to Cornbury Park in Charlbury for the return of the Wilderness festival, which starts tomorrow and runs until Sunday.

The festival’s fourth outing at the estate features London Grammar, Metronomy and the legendary Burt Bacarach. There will also be theatre events, banquets, torch-lit processions, masked balls and acrobatic displays as well as wild swimming, woodland foraging walks and meditation.

The festival was named the UK’s ‘Best New Festival’ at the 2012 Festival Awards UK.
