The release of the conceptual masterplan for Oxford’s new Railway and Coach Station has raised the prospect of an efficient and gleaming metal and glass structure which will be the subject of an international design competition.
I gather one of the overall objectives is to enhance the arrival experience to the city. As a landscape architect conscious of design solutions which also create distinctive places I would consider anything which looks like the new Reading Station, Birmingham International or Ebbsfleet to place Oxford in the ‘anywhere global city’ bracket. Oxford deserves better.
In an age when railway stations seem to want to morph into airport terminals could Oxford reject this anonymity and set a counter trend?
