You quote a local senior general practitioner in the article “GP service ‘is in real crisis’ ” (Monday, August 4) as saying that he works 4.5 days ‘in his practice’, and it sounded as if he was satisfied with that.

I think what many of us are unable to understand is that this seems to be regarded as quite proper. I assume that he, and others like him, are working full time: what do they spend the rest of their working hours doing?

When I think of the hours put in by other professional workers such as school teachers or lawyers, a 50-hour, 4.5 day, week seems rather leisurely.

There must be other working commitments they have if they are finding this level of work so stressful.

May those of us who are not well-versed in GPs’ schedules be allowed to know what is making their life so much more difficult than that of teachers or lawyers?
