Yesterday’s pong appears to be as baffling as it was smelly. Foul odours were detected across various locations in the county but so far the cause has remained a mystery.

Residents have kicked up a stink about it but Thames Water, which deals with our sewerage network, has said it’s nothing to do with them.

Meanwhile, local authorities haven’t had a whiff of an idea where it originated. And farmers say it’s not them spraying land with slurry. It’s the wrong time of year.

We are all just grateful the wind has blown it away.
