THE names of 82 men on a town’s war memorial will be read out before a church service to mark the First World War’s centenary.
People have been invited to the war memorial outside Wallingford’s Town Hall, in Market Place, before the recital from the roll of honour at 6pm tomorrow.
The congregation will then gather in St Mary-le-More Church, between St Mary’s Street and St Martin’s Street, where Wallingford Parish Choir will perform.
Church team rector Rev David Rice said it was important to mark 100 years since the war’s outbreak.
He said: “We want to remember the great courage that was shown by these people.’’ Sue Ledger will lead the choir with Gaby Clements as an accompanist.
They will sing excerpts from Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, which the Royal Armouries commissioned in 2000 for victims of the war in Kosovo.
Wallingford town councillor Ros Lester said the service would commemorate rather than celebrate the war.
She said: “There were far too many lives lost in the most awful circumstance — it was terrible.
“They were wasted for what when there was another world war afterwards.
“People need to realise what that war was about and the devastation of it.”
