THE Wheatley School team, that won the Bradbury Cup (Memory Lane, June 30) – I believe it was the Bob Gray Cup – played Bayswater Secondary School, Barton.
I played at left full-back for Bayswater in this game and unfortunately deflected the ball into my own net from a shot from Richard Roberts and we lost 1-0.
Our paths were to cross a couple of years later playing for Oxford Boys along with D Clements – I think he had the nickname 'Shakey'. When I got on the coach to go back to Bayswater School after the cup defeat, no-one sat by me.
However, our headmaster, Mr K Gallop, saw how upset I was and he sat beside me to tell me a story about our PE master Colin Kelly.
He was playing for Oxford City at the time and apparently when he made his debut for the City, he scored three own goals.
This somewhat cheered me up to know that it could happen to anyone.
Colin Kelly left Bayswater School to take up a new position at Cheney School – he featured in a recent article about Cheney.
Incidentally, some of the Wheatley players lived at Barton, but had to attend Wheatley School because their homes were just outside the city boundary.
Many thanks for bringing back fond memories of past times.
