Sir – Congratulations to the leader of Oxfordshire County Council for his bold vision of a single council for Oxfordshire with its savings in finance and the numbers of councillors.
My ex-colleagues on the council will know that I have rarely expressed my support for a particular councillor, but credit is due for a plan, which will benefit the county.
The aspirations of city politicians will be served by a return to the old title of, ‘The City and County of Oxford’, which is still shown on the old sign-post outside County Hall.
In any review I trust that a Thames Valley-wide contingency response organisation for natural and human emergencies will be implemented to save any breakdowns in response across the borders of the old counties of the area.
John Kelly, County Emergency Planning Officer, Oxfordshire 1992-2008, Oxford
