IN reply to your article Keeping strong in face (May 1), I feel I must correct a statement you made concerning MS: You said “while MS is not fatal, at present there is no cure”.
It is true, there is no cure, but it most certainly can be fatal. I have a diagnosis of MS and have known several people who have died of MS. In fact, it kills hundreds of people in this country, every year, and thousands worldwide.
A few weeks ago I attended an MS Research Day, at the Four Pillars Hotel in Oxford, where I asked a MS consultant whether MS is likely to shorten my life expectancy. She smiled and said, on average, it shortens life by six years.
I was glad she found it amusing. I did not. Thank you for allowing me to make this correction.
