UNIVERSITY chiefs hope a new car hire scheme will help ease congestion around the city.

Oxford Brookes University is offering five Hertz rental cars from its Harcourt Hill, Headington and Wheatley sites.

They can be rented by the hour for staff during working hours, and students during evenings, weekends and holidays. The university hopes students will share the vehicles and hire costs instead of using their own cars.

Sebastian Blake, from its sustainability team, said: “It will help move people into other forms of transport like buses.”

Chairman of Headington Transport Group Charles Young, of Kennett Road, said: “The car rental scheme is a good idea as it makes it less likely people will want to own a car, and will alleviate parking problems.”

There will be low emission Ford Fiestas at Gipsy Lane, the Clive Booth Student Village in Headington, Harcourt Hill and Wheatley, and an electric Mitsubishi i-Miev at the Headington Hill site.

The petrol cars cost £6-an-hour and 25p a mile and the electric car £4.50-an-hour.
