SEVENTEENTH century war hit the fields of Wood Green School during a day of re-enactment fun.

On Friday the Marquess of Winchester’s Regiment, from the English Civil War Society, gave year eight pupils at the Witney school a lesson about the nine-year-long war.

The whole of the school year, about 160 students, visited tents to learn about the 1642 to 1651 conflict between Parliamentarians and Royalists.

The battle led to the trial and execution of Charles I.

Pupils were given an insight into the history, the weapons soldiers would have used, and some demonstrations.

The school's visual and performing Arts administrator, Jenny Parrott, said: “The children really learned a lot from it and they were really interested.

“I think it made a huge difference to see everyone dressed up and it being interactive.”

Pupil John Buxton, 13, said: “I really enjoyed meeting the actors and learning about the lives of people from the civil war.

“It was like travelling back in time and getting a real first-hand experience of history. I especially liked the cavalry officers; one of them let me wear his hat. It was epic.”
