Perhaps David Garnham was trying to prove he was a budding sculptor. The eight-year-old is seen working with his file on what looks like a modern carving. He is watched by Francesca Hazard, seven, during lessons at the village school near Abingdon in 1972.

The village school had a well-rehearsed drill for pupils and staff to follow if fire broke out. In this picture, taken in 1966, the bell being rung by Stephen Smith, 10, was used to alert everyone inside the school, while the one in six-year-old Susan Glover’s hands summoned pupils in the playground. Regular fire practices were held at the 24-pupil school. Headmistress Miss W E Harman said: “Everyone can be out and away from the buildings in less than a minute.”

The village school celebrated its centenary in 1974 with a Victorian day. Girls were dressed in smocks and the boys in Victorian-style suits. Among the guests was Percy West, 97, a pupil from 1884 to 1890, pictured with Paul Michael and Joanna Moore, both eight.
