PUPILS at Marlborough School, Woodstock, built instruments for an orchestra entirely from scrap metal, drain pipes and other waste materials.

They were tackling a project set by Craig McConnel, the school’s art co-ordinator, to explore the creation of sound in 1989.

It proved so successful that it earned a prime spot on the BBC’s popular Blue Peter programme, where the class were invited to explain to viewers how they made their unusual and highly inventive instruments.
