An 83-year-old confronted two intruders in their home who claimed they were looking for a lost dog.
Police say the householder challenged the pair and they left the property in Main Road, Appleford, at about 7.30pm on Friday.
Officers said one of the men was white but tanned and in his mid 30s. The other was of a large build and walked with a hunch. Anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to call police on 101.
