ABOUT 20,000 people took part in a month-long table tennis festival across Oxford.
Throughout August, a total of 18 temporary ping pong tables were placed across the city in iconic, high profile and unusual public locations including the railway station, Bonn Square, Oxford Castle Quarter, Templars Square Shopping Centre in Cowley and various parks.
Oxford City Council is now exploring setting up an Oxford City Table Tennis Club as a result of the increased interest in the sport.
Mark Lygo, council board member for sport, parks and events, said: “An estimated 20,000 people took part in Ping! Oxford, which is fantastic for our first event.
“From the information we collected, three-quarters of the participants were male and there was a 50/50 split between adults and children showing that it was a great initiative for all the family.”
The 18 tables are being kept in the city at many community venues where people can play for free – for a list, visit pingoxford.co.uk The council hopes to stage the festival again next year.
