Problems with the heart, mind or body? Then eat a cupcake.

Spiritual healer Sarah Wilkinson has taken the adage “you are what you eat” to develop a line of tasty treats to balance your chakras.

For the less enlightened, the belief which features in tantric and yogic traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism is that there are seven major chakras – or energy points – on the body.

They are said to be portals to receive fresh energy, and that when a chakra is unbalanced problems can develop in the corresponding areas emotionally, physically and/or psychically.

Sarah, 32, of Summertown, Oxford, a certified practitioner of future life progression, past life regression and reiki, has come up with a delicious way to ensure harmony – chakra cakes.

“I began making chakra cakes accidentally as a parting gift to former work colleagues,” said Sarah, who spent 10 years working in higher education at Oxford University.

“As I was baking some cupcakes I realised that I was using different coloured fruits and colouring the sponge (which I would never do now!) and that they looked like chakra cakes, so I went in and introduced them as exactly that, with an information sheet on the chakras.

“A month or so after making this first batch I was guided intuitively to continue with developing and making these cakes as a way to engage with my community, showing them the benefits of holistic practice through food and to complement my other healing business – The Quantum Room.”

All of Sarah’s recipes are intuitive.

“I am drawn to include certain ingredients, I meditate on what to put into the cakes. The core ingredient from each cake also echoes the colour of the chakra it is associated with, and the main cupcake range is seasonal and organic.”

Most of her herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables are either grown organically in her own garden, her family’s, or supplied by local growers such as Cultivate, where she also sources organic eggs.

How do customers know which cake would be best for them?

“The fun of chakra cakes is to be drawn to the cake that most appeals without knowing what it is and then read about the chakra it represents and see if that resonates on a physical, mental or karmic level,” said Sarah, who sells online but also likes to hand deliver if she can, to meet her customers.

On a nutritional level Sarah says the cakes will satisfy a sweet tooth with an organic treat low in sugar, without preservatives or additives. Gluten and dairy free options are available and she is working on vegan alternatives.

“On a spiritual level each cake is made with loving intention to work with that chakra and charged with a corresponding crystal – this is what makes them especially different from a standard cake,” said Sarah.

“On a daily basis we need to clear and balance all our chakras, so to be fair you can’t really go wrong,” said Sarah. “However each of us individually has chakras that may be blocked or need extra attention; for example, I sometimes have a problem with grounding myself, with all the spiritual work I do, and can live in my head a bit too much (as a lot of people can through overanalysing and thinking), so I will eat root chakra cakes to help stabalise and keep me in the whole physical body and focused as I go about my business.”

The business is growing through word of mouth but Sarah stressed she was not running a profit-driven exercise.

“I like to support charities and have baked for Macmillan, The Blue Cross, Wolvercote Community Apple Orchard and will be entering the Oxford Bake Off next month to support Helen and Douglas House, which I used to volunteer for,” said Sarah, who is also setting up fundraisers for The Special Yoga Centre in London, which works with children with special needs.

You don’t need to be interested in chakras to eat Sarah’s cakes. “Obviously anyone can eat whatever they choose to with or without a full understanding of the product they are consuming. In fact arguably most people do this on a day to day basis,” said Sarah, who now offers chakra sessions along with the cakes and tea.

“I am here to help spread consciousness and the cakes are one vessel to do this. If we really start to appreciate the food we eat, bite by bite and feed ourselves with organic and natural produce we become more at one with our natural state of being and over time will feel the benefits of this on all levels - physically, mentally and spiritually.”

Cakes can be ordered online for delivery at £2.50 each (minimum order six).
