THIS Venetian gondola is just one of the boats taking part in a river relay on the Thames next month.

Owner and Oxford resident Richard Bailey will pass from Osney Lock to Iffley Lock on day five of the relay on September 5.

The two-week event starts on September 1 and will see a bottle filled from the source of the Thames in the Cotswold hills near Cirencester pass along the 215-mile length of the Thames before finishing at Tower Bridge in London.

Mr Bailey, 72, of Western Road, said: “I volunteered to do the Oxford stretch and it was accepted immediately which was nice.

“The gondola is only one of three in the UK, with one in Stratford and one used by film sets which is kept in London.

“It only goes at about two miles an hour in between locks, but I’m sure passengers will be eager to travel on it, and we have space for a maximum of six people.”
