AN Oxford DJ is cycling to his native Liverpool for his grandmother, who has dementia.

And he is setting off hours after a late-night DJ set at the O2 Academy.

Graphic designer Andrew Dawson, who helps design Liverpool Ladies’ FC official programme, is riding 180 miles to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The 41-year-old will set off from Oxford tomorrow and aims to reach Liverpool two days later. He has taken on the challenge in honour of his grandmother, Dolly, 83, who suffers from dementia.

He said: “It’s 180 miles home over two days and it’s going to hurt, so it would be fantastic if anyone would like to support me with a donation, no matter how small.

“My nana, Dolly, has been suffering with Alzheimer’s and dementia for a couple of years now.

“Such conditions are, well, grim – for both the sufferers and their families and friends. To be honest, it’s heartbreaking.

“The aim of this ride is to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK – helping them to continue their vital work, which will hopefully prevent others from suffering in the future.”

Mr Dawson will hit the road only hours after finishing his regular DJing slot at the O2 Academy tonight. He added: “Playing records in a nightclub until 3am the night before a massive ride isn’t ideal preparation – but it does make the whole thing a bit more of a challenge.”
