She may be Australian, but Pauline Conolly knows the Thames like the back of her hand.
From her holiday house in Marlow, she spent 20 years exploring the towpath, walking along the river to the sea, from its source near Kemble in Gloucestershire.
The publisher describes her book All Along the River: Tales From the Thames as a ‘humorous guide’, which sounds unpromising, but the author has done her research well, including some less well known stories about the history of Iffley, Sandford, Radley, Buscot, Kelmscott and other points along the route.
A particularly quirky touch is the inclusion of unusual recipes, from Oxford Sauce to Nettle Pudding. And it’s always interesting to get an outsider’s view of familiar scenes.
