ANGLER Mr E S Wetherall was delighted with this catch – as he had seen it before.

He had put the baby trout into the lake on the Mongewell estate, near Wallingford, in the 1920s.

And in 1950, he caught the same fish, which had grown to more than 9lb.

Mr Wetherall, who had been fishing at Mongewell for 40 years, estimated that the trout was more than 20 years old.

For still water, it was thought at the time to be almost a record for size.

Meanwhile, just two months after Marston Youth Club in Oxford was formed in 1983, youngsters hit the bullseye.

Four hotshots – pictured, left to right, Andrew Smith, Andrew Reid, Simon Jackson and Mark Willett – walked off with first prize in the under-14 county darts championship.

Some of the competitors were so small they couldn’t reach the top of the board to pull the darts out!
