AN OXFORDSHIRE chapel is the first religious building to reach the shortlist of a prestigious architecture prize.
Ripon College Cuddesdon’s new Bishop Edward King Chapel is one of six buildings in the running for the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Stirling Prize.
Ripon College principal, the Rev Canon Professor Martyn Percy, said: “There’s a deep pleasure in knowing that a building used for prayer and contemplation can be recognised for something else.”
The £2m chapel, funded by the Community of St John Baptist, opened in February this year and its interior is made of beech and ash wood.
Niall McLaughlin Architects called it “an uplifting spiritual space of great potency”.
The winner will be announced on September 26 in London.
