Sir – Before the plans for the new Westgate are set in concrete, the public transport infrastructure to serve it must be sorted out. May I suggest a solution?

Move the bus stations to the Oxpens, just across the road from John Lewis and the new Westgate and together with the soon-to-be-rebuilt railway station and its associated buses and taxis, create a first-class interchange with easy access to the city. Frideswide Square is freer in a flash.

All buses from the west turn right into Hollybush Row, and proceed to the station and then to Speedwell Street, St Aldates and the High if they are going further east.

Buses from the north use George Street, New Road and Norfolk Street to reach the new station, restoring connections with North Oxford. Services with destinations outside Oxford also start from the new bus station.

The mini-bus stations or turning points at Magdalen Street East, George Street, Gloucester Green, St Aldate’s etc are all moved to the new bus station, freeing up our streets and making them more pleasant and safer. More accommodation can be built at Gloucester Green and at the present railway station site, as well as some at the Oxpens.

Please, Messrs Hudspeth and Edwards, get the county, city, Network Rail and the bus companies together to produce a proper area plan that will stand the test of time, not just a series of unrelated developments.
