Sir – We’ve had The God Delusion, now we have ‘The God Argument’ (Weekend, May 30).

Why do these high-profile atheists like Richard Dawkins and AC Grayling find it necessary to try to combat religious faith?

Do they perhaps feel in some way threatened by people’s increasing awareness of a spiritual dimension to life? If they are aiming to persuade people to give up on God, they’ve got quite a job on their hands.

Taking the Christian faith as an example, in the first century AD Gamaliel advised the authorities not to oppose the apostles’ preaching, saying, effectively, ‘If their teaching is merely of human origin, it will fizzle out, but if it is of God, it will endure.’ (Acts 5). Two thousand years later, their teaching and faith live on.
