I AM currently doing research for a book about the football grounds of the United Kingdom and have visited some of the biggest clubs and roughest towns, but I have to say, there was nowhere worse than Oxford.
I attended the Rochdale game at the Kassam Stadium on April 20. Upon arriving in Oxford, I was expecting it to be a lovely place full of students with a vibrant, tourist atmosphere.
Instead, I got off the train and was greeted by streets filled with tracksuit-wearing thugs, rude taxi drivers, hoity-toity bars and vile behaviour within the football ground.
To top it all off I tried to chat to Chris Wilder, the Oxford FC manager, after the game, only to be told to go away in no uncertain terms.
Give me the working classes of Liverpool or Manchester any day. I won’t be returning to the rough streets of Oxford anytime soon.
