WERE you at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II?

Did you celebrate the event with street parties and festivities?

The Oxford Mail wants to hear people’s memories of the coronation, which took place on June 2, 1953.

Parties were held across Oxfordshire, including Cardigan Street, Florence Park Road, Waynflete Road, East Oxford Infants School, Randolph Street, Hawkins Street, Green Street and Leopold Street, and the Donnington Arms in Howard Street in Oxford, among others, and a number of Coronation Queens were crowned.

The dome of the Radcliffe Camera was festooned by a Union flag and decorations were put up across the city.

Woodstock has already put a lasting tribute in place to Her Majesty.

A cherry tree was planted in Park Street last week to mark the 60th anniversary year of her reign. Woodstock mayor Brian Yoxall said: “When we had the Diamond Jubilee celebrations last year, we didn’t mark it in any lasting way. We thought as this year was the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s actual coronation, we decided to look to mark the 60th anniversary of the coronation year.”

Mr Yoxall, centre, approached young people at local schools to brainstorm ways of marking the occasion.

He said: “One of the ideas they came up with was a tree-planting ceremony.

“We decided to go ahead with that because it is a nice and lasting way of marking the occasion. “At the same time as marking the coronation we wanted to pay tribute to the longevity of the Queen’s reign and the fact she’s been an absolute perfect role model.”

The ceremony concluded with a prayer led by Canon Barbara Doubtfire on Friday.

The tree was paid for by Woodstock Town Council and the planting was attended by about 30 people including John Harwood, right, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, and members of the Royal British Legion.

St Mary Magdalene Church, Woodstock, will hold a service on June 2 to mark the coronation.
