ONE of Oxford’s busiest shopping streets closed overnight to allow repairs to be carried out.

Pedestrianised Queen Street was closed to buses and emergency vehicles from 8pm last night until 6am this morning so engineers could carry out the repairs.

Buses and emergency vehicles were diverted during the work, carried out by Oxfordshire County Council.

Spokesman Martin Crabtree said: “We are doing some carriageway repairs and the road will be closed between the junction of New Inn Hall Street and St Aldate’s.

“There was a burst water main a few weeks ago.

“There were repairs scheduled anyway and we had to knock them back because of the problem with the water main.”

He said he did not believe it to be major work and added: “It has obviously been scheduled for the least busy time of day.”

A large number of bus routes were diverted during the work, including both Stagecoach and Oxford Bus Company services.

OBC spokesman Phil Ashworth said yesterday it was anticipated disruption would be “minimal”.
