THE plight of a Witney pub landlord who is facing eviction will be highlighted by a union demonstration.
The GMB union has pledged its support for Simon Moore, landlord of the Chequers Inn, Witney, and will hold the demonstration on Wednesday, May 8, from 11.30am.
As well as a rent of £35,000 a year, Mr Moore claims he has to pay £40,000 to owners Enterprise Inns every year because he has to buy all his stock from them.
The GMB is calling for the Government to introduce a statutory code for the pub industry, to allow tied tenants to buy products from the open market and pay a fair market rent for their pub buildings.
GMB spokesman Dave Mountford said: “Enterprise charges high rents to pubs like the Chequers Inn.
“There is no way Mr Moore could afford to pay rent amounting to 40 per cent of his net turnover and make ends meet.”
No-one from Enterprise Inns was available for comment.
