ONE man is fighting for his life after being rescued by firefighters during a blaze at an adult care home today.

The man was in a ground floor room at the Knowl care home in Stert Street in Abingdon and was rescued by firefighters.

He is suffering from burns and smoke inhalation and was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. A police spokesman said he was in a critical condition.

Two fire crews from Abingdon and one from Didcot were called to the blaze on the ground floor of The Knowl care home in Stert Street, Abingdon, at 4am.

One fire engine, police and scenes of crime officers were still on the scene at noon.

Detective Inspector John Turner confirmed there were no other injuries and that an investigation into the cause had been launched.

The Knowl provides rehabilitation and recovery services for people with long term mental health conditions.

Det Sgt Roger Lamboll added: “We are at the scene of this incident and are working closely with the fire service to investigate the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as unexplained.

“One man has been taken to hospital after suffering burns and smoke inhalation and he remains in a critical condition.”
